Bishop Creek Autumn Trip
Wednesday, October 8, 2025
This was a quick two-day excursion to Bishop Creek Canyon to take aspen photos and do a little fishing. After a quick trip to the recycling Center, I was on the road by about 10:30 AM. Other than a single photo stop the drive over Sonora Pass was uneventful. I was making good time on 395 South until I (and a bunch of other people) spotted a beautiful aspen grove just off the highway prior to getting to Mono Lake. A handful of pictures and I was on my way again. I arrived in Bishop at 4:00ish, followed by a trip to the fly shop for some tips and a handful of flies, and a wonderful steak dinner at Molcajetes Fusion restaurant. My first destination, and accommodations for the night, was the North Lake Campground — I was a little worried about getting a camping spot with only seven first-come-first-serve sites, but thankfully three of them were still open. After paying the fee to reserve the site, I drove to the pack station end of the lake for a few golden hour photos and some fishing. When I arrived, the sun was further down behind the mountains than I had hoped, making for less-than-ideal photography conditions. I took a few shots anyways, then grabbed my rod, reel, and tackle to try my luck. I accessed the water through an opening in the tulles to find trout jumping all over the place. Sadly, they didn't want any of the spoons or spinners that I tried. I did see a fly fisherman knee-deep in the lake catch a few. I wanted to get my tent set up before dark, so I headed back to the campground to get started. It took maybe 10 minutes. I popped open a beer and sat down to relax. The air temperature was getting colder by the minute, so I climbed into the tent before finishing my beverage. The best way to describe my night was uncomfortably cold — I tried a few combinations of clothing before I found something that would keep me both comfortable and warm enough under my three blankets to get some sleep. I was up and ready to go by 7:00 AM Wednesday morning. After a hot cup of pumpkin spice coffee, and bacon, eggs, and hash browns breakfast, I was ready to pack the tent and start my day. Photo stops after departing the campground included the day use area of North Lake, along North Lake Road including the middle fork of Bishop Creek, South Lake Road including Misty Falls, and South Lake. By the time I arrived at South Lake the wind was howling, so I headed back down into the canyon to do a little fly fishing in the south fork of Bishop Creek. I saw lots of trout in the pools I targeted, and although they would react to my flies, they wouldn't take them. Wanting to be home by dark I started down the mountain at about 1:00 PM, filled up at a gas station in Bishop, and headed north on 395. Although I took a couple rest breaks (and photos) near Mono Lake, I was making good time. Until… A lighted highway sign near Bridgeport was letting travelers know that 108 was shut down due to an ongoing incident (ended up being yet another tractor trailer driver mistakenly thinking he could get through Sonora Pass). Bottom line is I had to travel further north to and over Ebbetts Pass to get home, adding an hour-and-a-half to my trip.
