Railtown 1897 Photo Shoot

Saturday, August 16, 2025

I’ve been meaning to get to Railtown 1897 in Jamestown to take pictures of the infamous Movie Railroad’s star, Sierra Railway No. 3, ever since moving to Sonora. And after getting a Facebook notification that the vintage steam engine would be running this weekend I decided to go today. The first excursion departs the station at 10:30 AM, so I left home in time to stop at a pullout near the State Historic Park to get some distance shots of the entire train (engine and coal tender, two coaches, and a caboose) as it passed by. Once at Railtown I was able to get shots of the famous train coming and going twice more as it left on the noon and 1:30 PM trips and returned. In between, I photographed a variety of other steam and diesel locomotives, antique rolling stock in various stages of disrepair and restoration, and the equally famous Petticoat Junction water tower. I also had lunch (the park offers hotdogs, chips and cookies, and drinks for a small price) and watched the 18-minute film Steel and Steam, that documents the park’s history and its role in Hollywood films, that continuously plays in the visitor center. On my next visit I hope to ride the train and experience the golden age of rail travel in the destinations' authentic setting.
