The outdoors has been one of my passions since an early age. I grew up in Greenfield, Massachusetts, where I spent as much time as possible in the woods or near the water. My love of nature deepened after my parents gave me my first Canon SLR camera, allowing me to photograph some of the flora, fauna and landscapes around our home. My desire to discover more about the natural world led to a Bachelor of Science degree in marine biology from Southeastern Massachusetts University and several years of graduate school studying fisheries at Moss Landing Marine Laboratories in California. After getting a sound education I landed a job as a biologist with the City and County of San Francisco, where I spent 33 years (retired in July 2023) working on a variety of assignments that culminated in more than 20 years of Steelhead restoration projects in the East Bay’s Alameda Creek watershed. My primary profession, however, wasn't enough to satisfy my urge for being in and around our natural world. The need for more led to a parallel career as an outdoor writer and photographer. I have published numerous articles and photographs in magazines that include Angler’s Choice, Bassin’, Bassmaster, Bass Times, Bass West, Game & Fish, Gary Yamamoto’s Inside Line, and Western Outdoors. “Capturing the outdoors in pictures and print” has been and remains my motto, and it is my sincere hope that the sentiment is adequately expressed through some of the photos, videos, and articles I've made available on the briansak outdoors website.
